Padel doesn't have a strict dress code — but the right kit makes a genuine difference to your comfort and performance. From breathable tops to the all-important court shoes, here's exactly what to wear for padel in the UK, whether it's your first session or your fiftieth.
QUICK ANSWER
For your first session: any lightweight sports top, shorts or leggings, and proper court shoes (tennis shoes work fine). Avoid running shoes, jeans or anything baggy that restricts movement. That's it — padel has no formal dress code and most clubs are very relaxed about what you wear.
The essential padel kit list
1
Court shoes — non-negotiable
The single most important item. Must be non-marking with a herringbone grip pattern. Running shoes are dangerous and often banned by clubs. Tennis shoes work perfectly well as an alternative to dedicated padel shoes.
2
Moisture-wicking sports top
Indoor courts get warm quickly. A breathable, moisture-wicking top keeps you comfortable through a 90-minute session. Any sports top designed for running or gym use works perfectly.
3
Sports shorts, skirt or leggings
Anything that allows free movement in all directions. Padel involves lunging, stretching and rapid direction changes — restrictive clothing is a real problem. Standard sports shorts or tennis-style skirts are ideal.
4
Padel racket wristband (optional but useful)
A wrist sweatband stops sweat running down your forearm onto the grip — a surprisingly common issue during longer sessions. Cheap and genuinely useful.
5
Sports socks with ankle support
Padded sports socks with ankle cushioning make a real difference in comfort during long sessions. Avoid thin fashion socks — you'll feel every step on the hard court surface.
Tops and shirts
The best tops for padel are lightweight, breathable and moisture-wicking. The enclosed glass court environment means it gets warm fast — even in winter. Any sports top designed for tennis, running or gym use is ideal.
- Best choice — dedicated padel or tennis shirts from Adidas, Nike, Head or Bullpadel. Designed specifically for the movement patterns of court sports
- Good alternative — any moisture-wicking running or gym top. Polyester or nylon blends work better than cotton which holds sweat
- Avoid — cotton t-shirts (hold sweat and get heavy), anything with zips or hard buttons that could scratch the glass walls, hoodies or thick layers
Padel fashion is a real thing
On the continent padel players take their kit seriously — matching sets, padel-specific brands like Bullpadel, Siux and NOX. In the UK the scene is more relaxed but if you want to look the part, any good tennis brand works perfectly and the kit is widely available on Amazon.
Bottoms — shorts, skirts and leggings
For men
Standard sports shorts are the go-to — lightweight, mid-thigh length, with a drawstring waist. Tennis shorts are ideal as they're cut for lateral movement. Many padel players also wear compression shorts underneath for extra support during intense sessions.
For women
All three options work well — sports shorts, tennis skirts (with integrated shorts underneath) and leggings are all popular on UK padel courts. Tennis skirts have become particularly popular in padel as they allow maximum freedom of movement while looking great on court. Capri leggings work well in cooler indoor venues.
🩳
Sports shorts
The default choice for most players. Lightweight, breathable and unrestricted movement.
Recommended: Adidas Club shorts, Nike Court shorts — both available on Amazon UK from around £25
🩱
Tennis skirts
Popular with women players. Built-in shorts underneath, great freedom of movement and a clean court look.
Recommended: Nike Court Dri-FIT skirt, Adidas Club skirt — from around £30 on Amazon UK
🧘
Leggings
Great for cooler sessions or outdoor play. Full length or capri cut both work. Choose moisture-wicking fabrics.
Recommended: Nike Pro leggings, Adidas Techfit — from around £30 on Amazon UK
🩲
Compression shorts
Worn underneath shorts or skirts for muscle support. Particularly useful for players prone to thigh chafing.
Recommended: Under Armour HeatGear, Nike Pro — from around £20 on Amazon UK
Shoes — the most important item
We've covered this in depth in our best padel shoes guide, but the short version is: never wear running shoes on a padel court. They have the wrong grip pattern, no lateral support, and most clubs will turn you away at the door.
What you need is a court shoe with a herringbone grip pattern and good lateral support. Tennis shoes are a perfect alternative to dedicated padel shoes — they're designed for the same movements and work brilliantly on padel courts.
⚠️
Running shoes are banned at most padel clubs
This isn't a style choice — running shoes have grip patterns that mark and damage court surfaces. Most UK padel venues will not let you on court without proper non-marking court shoes. Always check before you go.
Accessories worth having
- Wristband — stops sweat running onto your grip. Cheap and effective. Most sports shops stock them
- Headband — keeps sweat and hair out of your eyes. Particularly useful in long sessions on warm indoor courts
- Sunglasses — essential for outdoor padel courts. Sport-specific wraparound styles stay on during movement
- Cap or visor — for outdoor play only. Won't be needed indoors but invaluable on outdoor courts in summer
- Grip tape — not clothing but worth mentioning. Extra grip tape on your racket handle can make a big difference in sweaty conditions
What to wear in summer vs winter
☀️ Summer / Warm sessions
- Lightweight moisture-wicking top
- Shorts or tennis skirt
- Wristband and headband
- Sunglasses for outdoor courts
- Cap or visor outdoors
- Extra water — courts get hot
🥶 Winter / Cold sessions
- Base layer under your top
- Leggings or thermal shorts
- Light zip-up to warm up in
- Thicker sports socks
- Court shoes still essential
- Remove layers as you warm up
Indoor courts are warmer than you think
UK indoor padel courts are enclosed glass boxes — they retain heat well. Even in January you'll be peeling off layers within 10 minutes of starting. Dress in light layers rather than one heavy layer.
Padel clothing — do's and don'ts
✓ DO WEAR
- Non-marking court shoes
- Moisture-wicking fabrics
- Clothing with full freedom of movement
- Wristband in warm sessions
- Padded sports socks
- Sunglasses on outdoor courts
- Light layers you can remove
✗ DON'T WEAR
- Running shoes or trainers
- Football boots
- Jeans or restrictive trousers
- Heavy cotton t-shirts
- Jewellery that could scratch glass
- Hoodies during play
- Marking soles on the court
Does padel have a dress code?
Most UK padel clubs have no formal dress code beyond requiring non-marking court shoes. A few premium clubs or members' clubs may ask for "appropriate sports attire" — which just means no jeans or casual clothing. As a rule, if you'd wear it to play tennis, you're fine for padel.
